National Property Accreditation Scheme (NPAS)

The National Property Accreditation Scheme (NPAS) is an industry-led program that is owned, governed, developed and administered by the Student Accommodation Association (SAA) to assist national education stakeholders to identify, promote and support quality managed student accommodation businesses that provide accommodation for the exclusive use of students.
SAA brings education and student accommodation providers together to promote the value of accommodation provided for the exclusive use of students, to support and enhance their education experience in Australia.
Launched in October 2020, NPAS is a stamp of quality that will enable education providers to be more confident in promoting an endorsed accommodation message and by doing so assist international students to make an informed accommodation choice.
Accommodation exploitation faced by international students has long been a concern for the Australian education industry and is largely a result of the risk adverse approach on behalf of education providers to develop an accommodation message and actively promote it, leaving students to research and secure accommodation from the “information universe”, being unregulated social media and online booking platforms.
Accommodation providers who don’t meet the SAA membership criteria are not eligible for NPAS accreditation which serves to identify a clear distinction between providers of accommodation for the exclusive use of students over accommodation which happens to be occupied by students.
With this point of difference clearly defined, students will come to appreciate the difference in risk profile and expectations between student accommodation and other accommodation options, enabling them to prepare accordingly.
In the unlikely event that an NPAS accredited property fails to deliver on a student’s expectations the student and their education provider are able to raise concerns directly with the Student Accommodation Association.
The National Property Accreditation Scheme is a tool designed to further enhance the Australian international education offering. Education providers are encouraged to become a member of the Student Accommodation Association to improve their visibility of the NPAS property portfolio, form relationships with accredited providers and contribute to the continuous improvement of the program.
