Career and Social Support for Future International Students in High Schools

Prof Nancy Arthur1

1University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia

What about international students in high schools? With the recent focus on international students in higher education, it is important to prepare for a future when younger international students and their families will be pursuing education options in Australia. Younger students have unique developmental and transition experiences that need to be addressed in a holistic approach. Join this presentation for a review of common issues and highlights from research in Canadian high schools that focused on ways to support younger international students for their career and social development.
There are three key points that will be emphasized in the presentation. First, although international students and their families select international education for many reasons, the number one reason is to increase their longer-term prospects for education and employment. Second, younger students often have a challenging time breaking into friendship groups, and lack local support systems. Third, whole school approaches can benefit not only international students, but increase the international learning for all students. As we envision international education for the future, it is important to consider the needs of this population and prepare for their return to Australian schools. Get ready, get set, and let’s be prepared to offer comprehensive and informed support services for the next wave of international students in high schools.
