Publishing, Funding and Networking: Strategies for PhD Candidates and Early Career Researchers

A/Prof. Catherine Gomes1

1Rmit University, Melbourne, Australia

‘Publish or Perish’ is the mantra PhD candidates and early career researchers (ECRs) are often confronted with, when navigating through the minefield that is publishing. Additionally, postgraduates and ECRs are often told that to succeed in academia, they need to successfully apply for funding not only in Australia/New Zealand but also, overseas during different points of their career. However to be successful in both, researchers need to develop relationships with individuals and groups within the academic and industry communities. This workshop provides an overview of the publishing and funding environments in Australia, as well as advice on networking with researchers and industry for possible collaborations and partnerships in both Australia and overseas. This interactive workshop discusses short and long term strategies for navigating through the exciting and evolving universe that is academia.
