1The Council Of The City Of Sydney, Sydney , Australia

The City of Sydney is the epicentre of international students studying in Sydney and NSW with over 35,000 enrolled across more than 150 education providers including universities, TAFEs, English language colleges and vocation education and training providers. Moreover, many more international students visit or work in the local area. During their stay in Australia, international students and their families rely on the council, seen as the host city, to provide a safe and rewarding experience. By partnering with the international education sector, the City seeks to support a harmonious experience to enable international students and their families to form a lifelong connection with Sydney that strengthens global ties. International Education is identified as a priority for the City. As such, the City’s International Education Action Plan, adopted in 2018, was developed through research and consultation with the sector including students, the government, institutions, support services and student representative bodies. Its 10 year framework identifies three key themes where the City is best-placed to support the sector: welcoming, wellbeing, and work-integrated learning. It offers insights into best practice with partnerships between local government and the sector and the unique role local government can play and details commitments and priority actions. The overarching focus of the plan is to promote the sustainable growth of Sydney’s international education sector while nurturing the range of benefits the sector offers City of Sydney communities and businesses. The need to enhance a positive live-learned study experience, especially in the face of intensifying competition, was clearly articulated in consultations. To address this, the City offers a range of initiatives including: ambassador program; education provider forum; grants, sponsorships and research; welcoming and orientation events and information; and co-designs projects in partnership with students, education providers, state government, support services, NGOS and agencies.
